Barcelona have announced the signing of Portuguese right-back Nelson Semedo from Benfica, pending a medical on Friday.
An initial €30 million fee + €5 million in bonuses was enough to clinch a deal for the 23-year-old, who is weighed up as Barca’s long-term solution at right-back.
Barcelona hastened their efforts to sign the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal winner after it became clear that Arsenal would not budge in their stance that Hector Bellerin was not for sale at any price.
Barcelona have struggled at right-back since the departure of Dani Alves in 2016. Sergi Roberto, a midfielder, occupied the position for most of last season as Aleix Vidal went down with an ankle injury that restricted him to just six La Liga appearances.
Nelson Semedo is an attacking, modern-day full-back whose abilities propelled him from the Benfica B team to the senior team in 2015. His bursts of pace from the right flank and ability to dribble past players helped him to six assists from 31 appearances in the Primeira Liga last season.
Though known for the occasional lapse in concentration, Semedo showed huge improvements to his overall game in 2016/17, which was the first season that the Portuguese international nailed down a starting berth at right-back with Benfica’s first team.
Barcelona hope to add Nelson Semedo to their squad for the pre-season tour of the United States.
