Lionel Messi has officially put pen to paper on a new Barcelona deal, tying his future to the club until 2021.

Barcelona announced a verbal agreement over a contract extension in July with reports suggesting a €300 million release clause.

However, as explained by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, the effects of Neymar’s mammoth move to Paris Saint-Germain has impacted the climate of the transfer market, calling for a significant upgrade.

Lionel Messi received his fourth European Golden Shoe award last week, putting him level with Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. He scored 37 league goals, his highest tally since 2015, adding to his personal triumphs of 2010 (40 goals), 2012 (50 goals) and 2013 (46 goals).

As announced through Barcelona’s official website, the Argentine lynchpin has signed an extension that includes an extraordinary €700 million release clause.

“The objective is to continue achieving things and making history,” said Messi, a four-time winner of the UEFA Champions League and eight-time winner of La Liga with Barcelona.

“We’ve been lucky enough to have won a great many things and I hope there will be more in the future.”

Lionel Messi is the top-scorer in La Liga with 12 goals in as many appearances, propelling Barcelona to the top of the table after losing out to Real Madrid last season.
