It is equal! Everything is equal now! The goals, the wins, the defeats, the draws, and even the goal difference!
After 20 thrilling, action-packed games of the season, the battle for the top spot has intensified between the arch-rivals, Manchester City and Chelsea. With the title rivals having equal points, equal goal difference and equal draws, wins and defeats, things could not be tighter at the top end of the Premier League table.
The New Year’s eve saw many dramatic and astonishing fixtures. Tottenham spurs stunned Jose Mourinho’s side by inflicting a crushing 5-3 defeat on them, at White Hart Lane. Manchester City, the current champions, pulled off a 3-2 win against Sunderland, at the Etihad Stadium. On the other hand, Manchester United drew 1-1 with Stoke and the Gunners lost 2-0 to the Saints. At the end of the day, Chelsea are still leading the table, but on alphabetical order only.
Now, the million-dollar question: What if it continues like this? What if the season ends with the two teams having the exactly identical records?
Thankfully, we have the rulebook to answer: “If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because 2 or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board.”
Well, this situation is highly unlikely, and it has never happened in the Premier League history before. But if it does happens this year, this title race would be most gripping, most interesting and most entertaining in the English Football history.
