Depay: I rejected FC Bayern

Depay reveals he rejected Bayern Munich in order to join Manchester United.

Memphis Depay was one of the hottest talents in Europe when Manchester United bought him. The former PSV winger was bought for £31 million, a hefty amount for a 21-year-old but Van Gaal and Manchester United knew what they were paying for.

Louis van Gaal was Depay’s coach at last year’s World Cup.
It was revealed at that time by Van Gaal himself that he had to intervene and ask the United board to act quickly as the player was about to head to Paris to join PSG. There were reports that the player was also approached by Liverpool but he chose Manchester United. The player has now revealed that he also rejected Bayern Munich in order to join the Old Trafford club.
Van Gaal was very influential in bringing Depay to Manchester United.

Depay said: “There were discussions with nearly all the top clubs,” he told German sports magazine SportBild. “And of course FC Bayern was one of them. But in the end Manchester United came out on top.” There’s no secret that Van Gaal played a big part in bringing the youngster to Old Trafford but Depay also had the chance to work one of the best coaches in the world including Pep Guardiola, one of Van Gaal’s disciples but the Dutch winger believes he is at the right place. Depay said: “I can’t say who the best coach in the world is. There are definitely a lot of good and well-known managers and Pep Guardiola is certainly one of them. “But I only spoke to Louis van Gaal and he totally convinced me. He gave me the feeling that I was very important for him not only as a player but also as a person. And then it was clear that I would go to Manchester United.”
