Gareth Southgate is about to lead the England national squad for the first time as their head-coach, as the Three Lions are to play Malta on Saturday afternoon.
It will be definitely interesting to see what starting lineup Southgate will choose and what will be his game-plan. However, it seems that one thing is certain – according to the team’s interim manager, Wayne Rooney will be in play and more importantly, as a midfielder instead of a forward.
It’s not for the first time that Rooney will be deployed in the mid-area of the pitch, but most of the times that has been done is when someone that usually plays in those positions has been unfit to play. Nevertheless, it seems that according to Southgate, the Manchester United player has the “ability to control games” and thus it’s justified for him to be in the midfield. A bit of a strong statement given Rooney’s recent performances behind the strikers.
