Riyad Mahrez will be the target of numerous major European clubs this summer as he expects Leicester City to honour the agreement from last season.
After lifting the Premier League title with The Foxes in 2016, Claudio Ranieri urged the Algerian to stay for another campaign. Mahrez subsequently signed a new four-year deal to keep potential buyers at bay, but a disappointing follow-up season has left his exit as an inevitability.
Barcelona were the standout side to show an interest in Mahrez as recent as this March, where a bid in the region of £30-34 million was being prepared for the summer.
From Mahrez’s point of view the move would be a no-brainer, as Barcelona could offer him Champions League football every season, but would come at the cost of largely playing off the bench.
From the point of view of the Spanish champions, Barcelona need quality options off the bench. The difference in depth of Barcelona and Real Madrid is largely thought to be the reason why Zinedine Zidane’s side are currently edging them out in the race for La Liga, which will likely go down to the wire.
However, the 26-year-old is open to staying in England. This will spark interest from London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, the latter of whom made an enquiry over Mahrez in the January transfer window.
Riyad Mahrez has performed inconsistently in an underwhelming Leicester City side this season, yet still has 10 goals and six assists to his name from 45 appearances in all competitions.
