AC Milan have completed the signing of Argentine centre-half Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal on a four-year deal.
The reported €18 million transfer for the 26-year-old is Milan’s first official signing of the season.
Musacchio departs Villarreal after almost eight years with the club, initially playing for Villarreal B in the Segunda Division before debuting for the senior side in February 2010.
He has gone on to make 271 appearances for Villarreal, sticking with the side even after they were relegated in 2012.
Musacchio now joins the Serie A outfit as they look to rebuild their status in Italian and world football.
The Rossoneri clinched sixth spot in Serie A this season, their highest finish in four years, and will return to European competition in the UEFA Europa League.
Musacchio’s signing is likely to be one of several additions to AC Milan over the summer, with Atalanta midfielder Franck Kessie expected to undergo a medical in the coming days.
AC Milan are also in talks to sign Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez, while Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata remains a target, though the Spaniard’s services would demand a fee in the region of €60 million.
