Everton sign Michael Keane for club-record fee

Everton have completed their fifth signing of the summer, bringing in Burnley’s Michael Keane in a deal which could eventually rise to £30 million.

After playing for the Republic of Ireland at under-17 and under-19 level, Michael Keane worked his way through the ranks at England’s international youth levels before debuting for the senior side in March, playing 90 minutes in a friendly loss to Germany

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with The Toffees following a solid season at Burnley, where he made 35 Premier League appearances as Sean Dyche’s troops comfortably escaped relegation.

A return to Manchester United appeared possible some weeks ago, but The Red Devils picked up Swedish defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica, meaning Keane would struggle for first-team football at the club he made his Premier League debut with.

Manchester United will benefit from Everton’s signing in a financial sense, as they receive 25% of the transfer fee due to terms set in his Burnley contract when he signed from United in 2015.

“I am absolutely delighted to be at Everton, a fantastic football club with passionate fans and a great tradition and I can’t wait to come into training tomorrow to meet all the lads,” said Keane in his first interview as an Everton player.

Michael Keane adds to Everton’s defensive options and will compete with the likes of Phil Jagielka, Ramiro Funes Mori and Mason Holgate for a spot alongside Ashley Williams.

He will not be the only player linking up with new teammates in preseason, as Everton have also completed signings of Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaasen, Henry Onyekuru and Sandro Ramirez.

That brings Everton’s summer spending total to almost £100 million, the most by any Premier League club thus far.

The sale of a certain Romelu Lukaku could essentially finance the transfers of these five players, though, as Chelsea are reportedly willing to depart with a world-record fee to land the Belgian striker.
