Chelsea targeting Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater

Chelsea are showing interest in signing 2016 Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater, per Sky Sports.

The Leicester City player is being eyed to help strengthen the midfield ranks at Chelsea, who recently sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United and Nathaniel Chalobah to Watford.

Chelsea are left with only N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko as recognised central midfielders, leaving them thin on depth ahead of a season where the addition of Champions League fixtures must be taken into account.

Danny Drinkwater began his career at Manchester United, working his way through the youth ranks before being called up to the senior team in May 2009, but he never made an appearance for The Red Devils. Loans to Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Watford and Barnsley followed before a permanent move to Leicester City. He formed an industrious and effective partnership with current Chelsea man N’Golo Kante in the centre of midfield, which proved pivotal to their eventual Premier League triumph in 2015/16.

While the 27-year-old wouldn’t come into the squad as a starting player, he would provide ample cover for the three mentioned players, and adds Champions League experience to the squad after a strong run to the Quarter-Finals with The Foxes last season.

However, his stature is significantly more secure at Leicester, who would be hesitant to sell, and the possibility of scattered playing time could hinder his chances at making the England squad for next year’s World Cup.
