Basque newspaper Noticias De Gipuzkoa is reporting that Barcelona are moving towards a deal for Real Sociedad centre-half Inigo Martinez.
His signing is reportedly at the recommendation of Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde.
The Catalans are fresh off the sale of superstar Brazilian Neymar for a world-record €222 million, leaving them with a plethora of resources to reinforce the squad heading into the new campaign.
Martinez, 26, is contracted with Real Sociedad until June 2021 with a €30 million release clause – a fee which Barcelona are ready to meet.
He has enjoyed international honours at under-21 level with Spain, lifting the UEFA European under-21 Championship in 2013, and has turned out four times for La Roja.
With Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti as the preferred defensive partnership and Javier Mascherano offering cover, Inigo Martinez’s arrival is reportedly set to be accommodated by a loan arrangement for Marlon Santos.
