Edu Polo of Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo is reporting of Manchester United’s interest in Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto.
His report claims that Manchester United have started with an offer of €40 million (£36 million) for the Spanish international.
Roberto, 25, is a Barcelona academy product whose versatility earned him a starting role at right-back last season.
However, following the signing of 23-year-old Portuguese right-back Nelson Semedo from Benfica, Sergi Roberto will likely return to a midfield role with the Catalans – should he stay at the club.
English interest in Sergi Roberto doesn’t end with Manchester United, though, as Chelsea are also thought to be monitoring the player as they search for a replacement for Nemanja Matic.
The Blues are thin on depth in the central midfield department – Cesc Fabregas, N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko (who hasn’t been involved in pre-season due to an injury he won’t recover from until the end of August) are their only recognised central midfielders – ahead of a season where the rigours of Champions League football will strain their title defence.
