Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for five games following an action-packed cameo appearance in the Spanish Super Cup that ended with him pushing referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea after being sent off.

Ronaldo came on as a substitute in the 58th minute against Barcelona, scoring a spectacular effort from range to give the Spanish and European Champions the lead.

Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed his visits to the Camp Nou since joining Real Madrid in 2009; he has 17 goals in 28 appearances in El Clasico, 11 of which have come at Barcelona’s home ground, which is one more than Lionel Messi has managed in those fixtures.

His subsequent yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration of the strike would eventually lead to his sending off, when the referee showed him a second yellow card for diving.

“Ronaldo’s sending-off annoys me because even if it’s not a penalty, the card is harsh,” said Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

The Portuguese superstar will miss Wednesday’s second leg and is ruled out of domestic action until September 20, but he is free to play in Champions League fixtures.
