Tottenham agree fee for Colombia and Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez

Tottenham have agreed a club-record fee of up to £42 million for Colombia and Ajax centre-half Davinson Sanchez, writes The Guardian.

As the deal impends, Ajax removed the Colombian from their Europa League playoff squad against Rosenborg on Thursday night.

They will receive £28 million up front plus a potential £14 million in added bonuses from last season’s Premier League runners-up.

Davinson Sanchez has an extremely impressive CV for a 21-year-old; he won a multitude of titles with Atletico Nacional in Colombia, most notably four league titles and the Copa Libertadores, and was named Ajax’s player of the year in a debut season in Europe that could so easily have yielded both the Dutch league title and UEFA Europa League.

21-year-old Davinson Sanchez impressed in his debut season in Europe, making 43 appearances for Ajax as they narrowly missed out on Eredivisie and Europa League glory.

Ajax were understandably hesitant to sell initially, claiming a bid in the region of €50 million (£45m) was necessary for the Colombian’s services, but have agreed in principle to an up front + bonus payment that will reach €46 million.

Tottenham have remained surprisingly inactive this transfer window, making no additions to their squad and failing to respond to the near £50 million sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City.
