Chelsea secure Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta on deadline day

Chelsea have clinched late deals for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater and Torino defender Davide Zappacosta on transfer deadline day.

The signing of Danny Drinkwater had long been reported by various sources and Leicester City confirmed the move today with a statement on their official website.

“Leicester City Football Club has agreed a deal for the transfer of midfielder Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea for a club-record fee,” read part of the statement.

Danny Drinkwater lifted both the Premier League and Championship trophies in the blue of Leicester City, where he made 217 appearances since signing from Manchester United in 2012.

Deals for Davide Zappacosta (reported £23 million) and Danny Drinkwater (reported £35 million) brings Chelsea’s summer spending to £185 million after deals for Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger. However, they’ve raised just over £100 million from the sales of seven players and could recoup an additional £40 million by selling wantaway striker Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid.

Antonio Conte’s move for Italian full-back Davide Zappacosta came as somewhat of a surprise but is understandable when considering the club’s failed attempts to sign Alex Sandro from Juventus and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.

The 25-year-old has four caps for Italy, making his debut in November of last year, and turned out 59 times for Torino since signing from Atalanta for just €5.5 million in 2015.
