Stunning bicycle kick goal from the Greek Superleague

While Manchester City stole the headlines with a brutalising 5-0 victory over a lifeless Liverpool in England and Hoffenheim upset Bayern Munich with a shock 2-0 win in Germany, AEK Athens midfielder Petros Mantalos scored quite possibly the goal of the weekend in the Greek Superleague.

With the Sunday afternoon tie against Larissa barely five minutes in, AEK full-back Michalis Bakakis played in a cross from the right flank to a crowded penalty area.

The unmarked Greek international, Mantalos, had to adjust his feet to meet the trajectory of Bakakis’ cross, which was slightly behind him, before unleashing a looping bicycle kick over the hapless Giannis Anestis is Larissa’s goal.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors when former Panathinaikos man Viktor Klonaridis doubled their advantage on 34 minutes, while a red card early in the second half forced them to play the last 40-odd minutes a man down en route to a 4-0 victory for Dikefalos Aetos.

AEK’s victory puts them atop the Superleague table after the opening three rounds, tied on seven points with Olympiakos and Panionios.

AEK now prepare for a UEFA Europa League meeting with Rijeka on Thursday, which marks their first appearance in European competition since 2011/12.
