Vincenzo Montella under pressure after underwhelming AC Milan start

Vincenzo Montella faces an uncertain future as AC Milan boss after an underwhelming start to the campaign.

The Rossoneri spent just shy of €200 million recruiting an almost entirely new squad over the summer but sit in 7th place in Serie A after losing three of their opening seven games.

While it has been widely reported that Vincenzo Montella received the backing of CEO Marco Fassone and director of sport Massimiliano Mirabelli in a ‘crisis meeting’ following the 2-0 defeat to Roma, things will definitely get complicated should they lose the derby to Inter Milan after the international break.

Nine of AC Milan’s starting XI against AS Roma included players signed over the summer; Leonardo Bonucci (€42 million), Mateo Musacchio (€18 million), Ricardo Rodriguez (€15 million), Hakan Calhanoglu (€22 million), Lucas Biglia (€17 million), Franck Kessie (Loan, will cost €8 million when made permanent), Fabio Borini (Loan, will cost €6 million when made permanent), Nikola Kalinic (Loan, will cost €25 million when made permanent) and Andre Silva (€38 million) all started in the 2-0 loss, with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Alessio Romagnoli the only starters who were with AC Milan last season.

According to Mediaset Premium, AC Milan have already contacted two potential successors to Montella: Paulo Sousa and Walter Mazzarri.

Paulo Sousa has been out of management since leaving Fiorentina in May, while Walter Mazzarri is unattached after a season in the English Premier League with Watford.
