Jupp Heynckes named Bayern Munich manager until the end of the season

Bayern Munich have officially announced Jupp Heynckes as their manager until the end of the season following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti.

This will be Jupp Heynckes’ fourth spell as Bayern Munich manager, most recently having left the club after winning a historic treble in 2013 – the Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Jupp Heynckes has won two UEFA Champions League titles as manager, the first being with Real Madrid in 1998. Despite his success on the European stage, he was sacked after his first and only season at Real Madrid. The board cited domestic performances for his release, as Real Madrid finished 4th and were knocked out in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey.

“I would not have returned to any other club in the world,” said Heynckes.

“Bayern Munich is very close to my heart. My coaching staff and I will now do everything to bring back successful football for the fans. I’m very much looking forward to this challenge.”

Jupp Heynckes has brought in Bayern Munich’s head of academy Hermann Gerland and Fortuna Dusseldorf assistant coach Peter Hermann into his staff.

The 72-year-old will try to turn around Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League campaign when they meet Celtic on matchday three, while his first assessment in the Bundesliga comes at home to Freiburg.
