FIFA Puskas Award Finalists

Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick effort against Crystal Palace last season has made it into the final three of the FIFA Puskas Award for the ‘most beautiful goal of the season’.

The Frenchman is joined by Oscarine Masuluke, a goalkeeper who plays in the South African Premier Division with Baroka FC, and 18-year-old Venezuelan international Deyna Castellanos.

The FIFA Puskas Award was introduced in 2009 to honour Ferenc Puskas, a Real Madrid legend of the late 1950s and 60s, and to recognize the ‘most beautiful’ goal of the year – based on its subjective beauty, fairness and without distinction of championship, gender or nationality.

While Giroud’s strike encapsulated exceptional skill and improvisation, the fact that a goalkeeper is on the list demonstrates just how extraordinary of a goal that the South African scored; a stunning overhead kick after coming up to attack a corner late on.

As for Deyna Castellanos, she managed a 94th minute winner for Venezuela in the under-17 Women’s World Cup – a strike which she took from the half-way line.

Public voting for the FIFA Puskas Award will continue until October 23.
