Arsenal injury concerns piling with Shkodran Mustafi out for four weeks

Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi faces at least four weeks on the sidelines after suffering a muscle tear in his thigh on international duty for Germany.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed the length of absence for Shkodran Mustafi before stating that vice-captain Laurent Koscielny is currently unavailable for Arsenal’s clash with Watford in the Premier League on Sunday.

“I don’t think he (Shkodran Mustafi) will be available until the next international break,” said Wenger.

“(Laurent) Koscielny has a definite final test tomorrow. At the moment, he’s not available.”

In the absence of the key defensive duo, Arsene Wenger could call upon the services of long-serving German defender Per Mertesacker. The 33-year-old has made three starts for Arsenal in the League Cup and UEFA Europa League this season, but hasn’t started a Premier League game since April 2016.

Sead Kolasinac, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey all face assessments to determine their availability for the weekend after each of them returned from failed attempts to qualify for the 2018 World Cup with Bosnia, Chile and Wales.
