Bayern Munich’s road to German Cup glory has met another monumental hurdle after drawing holders Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16.
With former Bayern Munich man Stefan Effenberg present to draw the Round of 16 fixtures, Die Bayern were handed consecutive cup fixtures against a formidable opponent – having edged their way past RB Leipzig on penalties in the second round.
Memories of last season’s Semi-Final will be fresh for Bayern, who lost 3-2 to Dortmund at Allianz Arena before watching their rivals go on to secure the German Cup by knocking off Eintracht Frankfurt in the Final.
Jupp Heynckes has swiftly steadied the ship at Bayern Munich following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in September, winning five straight fixtures and conceding just one goal in the process.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have stuttered their way through their last five matches, winning just one game – against third-tier outfit Magdeburg in the second round of the German Cup.
Regardless, an early draw with Borussia Dortmund was the worst case scenario for Bayern Munich, who have their work cut out for them in order to go one step closer to reclaiming their German Cup throne.
Bayern Munich will host the tie on either December 19 or 20 in a repeat of three of the last six German Cup Finals.
