Olympique Marseille defender Patrice Evra was shown a straight red card in Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League clash with Vitoria Guimaraes, despite the Frenchman not playing a single minute.
The former France and Manchester United player was listed as a substitute for Marseille but never even made it to kick-off.
In what can only be described as a moment of madness, Patrice Evra channelled his inner Eric Cantona by directing a Mortal Kombat-style kung-fu kick into the crowd, and was subsequently sent off.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Ee-jeKJC8
Patrice Evra’s actions were explained by French newspaper L’Equipe, who reported that the confrontation was with Marseille fans that were taunting the 36-year-old for his lacklustre form over the past year.
Marseille boss Rudi Garcia questioned Evra’s decision, saying, “Pat has experience and he must not react, it’s obvious.”
“Patrice is a more than experienced player. You can’t respond to insults, as bad as they are and as incredible as they might be. He must learn to keep his cool.”
Patrice Evra has been a peripheral figure at Marseille this season, starting just four times in Ligue 1, where they sit in 4th spot after 11 games.
