Adam Lallana nearing Liverpool return after lengthy layoff

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is preparing for a return to action in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood this week, according to ESPN FC.

He will play alongside a Liverpool team comprised of youngsters and players who are not on international duty, such as Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while their opponents are yet to be decided.

Adam Lallana relished his new role under Jurgen Klopp last season, playing as one of the three central midfielders in a 4-3-3. Lallana was allowed more time and space on the ball and used his energy and tenacity to press high up the pitch. He enjoyed his most prolific season with The Reds and was one of their main sources for goals alongside Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, scoring eight times in 31 Premier League appearances.

The England international has missed the opening three months of the season after sustaining a thigh injury in a pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich.

Jurgen Klopp has already confirmed he plans on using the 29-year-old after the international break, when Liverpool host Adam Lallana’s former club Southampton.

The Reds will keep a close eye on Adam Lallana’s progress as well as Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho’s international endeavours.

The former made a surprise return from a hamstring injury in the 4-1 win over West Ham, appearing to be not quite 100%, while the latter’s thigh injury that has kept him out of Liverpool’s last three matches.
