Radio Catalunya are reporting a deal between Barcelona and the representatives of Mesut Ozil for a €20 million transfer in January.
The 29-year-old’s future has been a hot topic of debate as he approaches the final six months of his contract with Arsenal.
The Gunners view the move as the closest to a win-win situation as possible; they won’t be offloading the German international to a Premier League rival and will recoup a fee for his transfer, which won’t happen if he departs in the summer.
However, Arsenal’s ranks do not currently possess a midfielder of his calibre, leaving a void of creativity to be filled at The Emirates.
While Mesut Ozil is one of Arsenal’s key players in the Premier League, there’s been a sense of discontent emanating from the former Real Madrid man for quite some time, perhaps originating from a feeling that his talents are being wasted in Europe’s second-tier competition.
The move makes sense for both parties; Mesut Ozil is a top-calibre player who needs to be playing in the UEFA Champions League, while Barcelona won’t have to spend an exuberant amount to sign him as they would with Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.
Many believe Barcelona’s playing style will get the best out of Mesut Ozil, who has come under fire from pundits and journalists alike for relatively anonymous performances in big games for Arsenal in the last year.
