Real Madrid are intent on sorting out a long-term replacement for French striker Karim Benzema.
The 29-year-old is one of the elder statemen at Real Madrid, who he joined in 2009, but dwindling goalscoring figures have accelerated Los Blancos need for a replacement.
According to reports from Premium Sport, Real Madrid are planning on a move for Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi.
Mauro Icardi is one of the most promising strikers in Europe, having netted 91 times in 159 appearances for Inter Milan.
Former AC Milan forward and Premium Sport commentator Daniele Massaro is adamant Mauro Icardi will end up at Real Madrid next year.
“I can tell you today that Mauro Icardi will be a Real Madrid striker next year,” said Massaro.
“His arrival will be at the expense of (Karim) Benzema.”
However, Inter Milan are nowhere near ready to let their crown jewel depart without a fight, especially amidst a renaissance of sorts in Serie A, where Inter Milan sit in 2nd spot after 13 games.
Calciomercato.com’s Fabrizio Romano believes that UEFA Champions League qualification will enable Inter Milan to offer the Argentine a bumper new deal, including an improved salary and bigger release clause.
The release clause in his current contract, which expires in 2021, is set at €110 million.
Mauro Icardi is the second top-scorer in Serie A with 13 goals in as many games, trailing the tally of Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, who has 15.
